FIFA 2005 is the first game of the FIFA series to be released on PC. As such, it was also the ninth football (soccer) video game in general to be released on PC as well as on consoles, and it represented EA Sports' first FIFA game on this particular platform. Although EA Sports produced a PC-specific version of FIFA 99, which had been released on consoles earlier that year, for 2000 and 2001 they opted not to do so. It wasn't until 2002 that they began releasing console versions for both Xbox and PlayStation 2 alongside their original releases. Up to that point, only the PlayStation version had been PC-compatible, with all other versions being PC-only. The game was played in full 3D mode by default, with the option to play it in 2D mode on computers without a 3D card. The use of 2D mode was well received by reviewers who said that the mode "retains much of the charm of playing on a regular TV but at a reduced resolution." It was also noted that using this mode would cause some graphical issues on high-resolution monitors, such as missing pop-up and flickering textures. The game was given an overall rating of 7.5 out of 10 by IGN, who said that the game would not appeal to anyone "who prefers a pure simulation experience", and that "the arcade-style action is a notch too wild for the purists". The review also noted that this "arcade" style was far from being "outrageous or over-the-top", and concluded its statement by saying that it offers gamers a "great blend of arcade fun and unparalleled realism." In their review, GameSpot generally praised the gameplay in the English version, however they criticized the lack of features in comparison to previous installments. The Xbox version received a 7.8 out of 10 from GameSpot, who said it offers "a unique and fun alternative to the control scheme offered by the PlayStation 2 version." They also praised the graphics and audio as being "nothing short of fantastic". GameRankings gave both versions a score of 77.81%.FIFA 2002 was initially released for PC on 12 October 2001 in Europe and on 5 February 2002 in North America. The game's success led EA Sports to release FIFA 2003 for PC later that year. However, it was not until after the release of FIFA 2004, which was available for both platforms, that EA Sports decided to release a PC-specific edition of FIFA 2005. In January 2001, when FIFA's PC release had been confirmed, EA Sports told Eurogamer that the game would be "played in [a] soccer mode with detailed graphics and real-time animation". In June 2002, when the PC version of FIFA 2002 was released, EA Sports announced that it would be a launch title for the platform. The following month, in August 2002, EA Sports said that there wasn't a dedicated editor in the initial release of FIFA 2002 for PC because "they wanted their fans to focus on playing" instead. However a year later in February 2003 a dedicated editor was released in an update. eccc085e13
